Planning, Setting & Iconography

The purpose of settings within a music video is to set the mood of the song and to build a relationship between the audience and the mood/setting, this overall makes the video more successful. Diverse iconography and props can also make a video more successful by being diverse playing a role in the narrative. these aspects of a music video also make the video more understandable and instruments used for example such as guitar can portray the music genre e.g. rock, indie and alternative.

what settings will you include and why

We will include a variety of settings such as:

  • A bedroom
  • A singular tree ( performance
  • A dead tree (narrative)
  • Brick lane
  • Liverpool Street
  • City streets
  • A House
The settings used will be a bedroom, this is to show a young persons relationship and the way that the couple on screen relate to each other in private. The dead tree will symbolise the problems in this relationship, yet the alive tree by the lake will be used purely for the performance of the song. This will be successful as it will symbolise the female character moving on and looking back at past relationships. The city streets will be good as we will use camera techniques to show the fast moving pase of the city and how the male and female are standing still. This will get across the narrative of just including the couple as it shows that nothing else matters to them apart from each other. This is typical for the pop music genre as it conveys a typical teenage relationship and build more of a relationship between the audience and the artist which makes her more of a success. Brick lane will be an idilic setting in order to show the edgy side to the artist and display an interesting urban setting which is typical of an indie music video. Not only will this setting be conventional, it will show the audience that the artist is edgy and cool which will make our video more successful because a young audience will wish to follow the artists style and she will become a trend setter. Using a house setting will be conventional for a pop video and it will show the couple in a new light. This will make the artist ordinary therefore relating to the audience and making our video more successful

In addition to to this we will use the following iconography:
  • A guitar
  • Cigerettes
The setting is important within our own music video as it portrays the mood of the on screen relationship and the audience can see the reckless behaviour of the characters as well as an unconventional teenage relationship
  • what iconography?

how is setting and iconographt conventional to your music genre

how does it build a relationship  with your target audience.

  1. You have made a start in describing the different locations and iconography elements that you wish to include within your music video. However, the points that you have included are too basic and do not address the codes and conventions of an indie music video. You also need to consider the purpose and effect that these elements will have on your audience too.

Finally, aim to include still images to support your points.
