What is a Music Video?

The purpose of a music video is to show a short narrative that represents the artist in order to promote them and their song. A music video is a market tool and can also advertise and sell artist products and allow the audience to remember the song that the video is portraying. Each music video conventions according to the artist and songs genre, for example a rock music video features the instruments being played, where as a RNB artist usually features expensive cars and sexualised images of women who are wearing minimal clothes.
There are 3 different categories to look at when analysing a music video. These are performance, the artist performing the song; narrative, the story behind the song; and the concept, selling the idea behind the video. These all help to sell the music video and the song it’s depicting which ultimately makes it more successful. This is evident in Christina Aguilera ‘beautiful’ video where she is pictured singing in a dirty flat, which fits in with the concept of the video and the narrative that everyone should be accepted, and its ok to be different.

The music video that I analysed was Alors on Danse by French artist Stromae. The genre for this song is dance, and the music video reflects a narrative of a down to earth normal mundane working life.  This connects with the audience as people can relate to the mans working life. The alternative style of this video is also seen as the screen is split therefore showing more detail of the mans work and how boring it his, therefore the solution is to ‘dance’. This idea that dance and this song playing can solve his problems is what he wants to sell to the audience so they buy and listen to his track.

THIS COMES FROM THE MUSIC VIDEO, AND DIPICTS THE MANS MUNDANE WORKING LIFE.
THE ROOM IS DARK AND CROWED WITH PEOPLE DANCING, THIS IS CONVENTIONAL FOR MOST DANCE TRACKS MUSIC VIDEOS.

In alot of respects this music video is conventional for a dance track as towards the end a large group of people are seen dancing and reacting to the music playing (which is the song played throughout the video) and creating the desired hedonistic party atmosphere which the song is promoting.

  1. This post demonstrates a basic understanding of what the purpose of a music video is and this is because you have not considered any examples, to support the points that you have made. You need to explain how-
    1) the purpose
    2) the style
    3) the codes and conventions
    4) the target audience

are used in a music video of your choice. You have started to define these points, but further discussion is needed.
